Naturally, Ron Abuelo is called after a grandpa, as the Spanish word "abuelo" denotes. In 1908, José Varela Blanco traveled from Galicia, Spain, to Panama. Despite the fact that the family just started distilling in the 1930s and the rum bearing his name wasn't introduced until the 1950s, this date is printed on every bottle. The rum is made from five distinct types of sugarcane that are grown on its 1600-hectare estate close to the town of Pesé. It is mostly gathered by hand. Unusually for rum from Latin America, molasses and pure sugarcane juice are used in an 80/20 ratio. Separate processes are used to ferment, distill, and age the two varieties of sugar. The unique yeast that Abuelo utilizes is made from pineapple.
